Carnegie Mellon faculty and students at the Field Robotics Center are developing a lunar rover to be part of the first commerical mission to the moon. Supported by Astrobotic Technology, this robot will land in the Sea of Tranquility and broadcast High Definition video as it traverses the lunar terrain to Apollo 11.
In completing its Tranquility Trek, the rover will also fulfill all the requirements of the Google Lunar X PRIZE. Red Rover will become the first privately funded space robot to traverse the moon, jumpstarting an era of space robotic services.
Students from across all disciplines are participating in this truly inspiring project through independent research and a robotics course. This fall, 16-861 Mobile Robot Design meets 5:30-6:50pm Mon/Wed in Newell Simon Room 3002.
